Truth Behind Speculations of Zoom being a Chinese App

The Government of India banned 59 mobile Chinese apps on 29th June, 2020. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that these Chinese apps were found to be involved in activities which would raise serious concerns regarding data security and privacy of 130 crore Indians. Further, it added that such concerns possess threats to sovereignty, integrity and security of the country.

Tik Tok, UC Browser, Shareit, Viva Video, Shein, etc were some of the famous apps among the banned 59 apps. These chinese apps were suspected to be yielding data from the large database of user network build, serving them to Chinese agencies.

After the ban of these apps led to a controversy on social media platforms afterwards as to why apps like zoom were not banned along with the list of 59 banned Chinese apps.

Truth

The Zoom app was founded in 2011, with its software launched in 2013 by Eric Yuan who is a Chinese-American billionaire businessman and holds American citizenship. He is a citizen of the US since 2007 and has been residing since 1997. Zoom is an American technology company with its headquarters located in San Jose, California. Eric Yuan actually owns only 22% of the company. The company has 17 data centers of which 1 is located in China and that too is run by a Australian company.

Zoom app found its importance and gave raging competition in the market during Covid-19 in the quarantine period as it facilitated online education and communication using technology on a wide scale. This app provides services like video conferencing along with online chat through cloud based software.

Criticism

Since the increase in number of users during the pandemic period, various concerns in aspect to privacy of data have been raised. Although it is an American established company but still it faces privacy and security issues as a part of Zoom’s workspace i.e one data center of the 17 present data centers is located in China. The app however is not used the by the Indian government authorities in their offices and the agencies are keeping it under surveillance due to security issues.

Inference

Yuan called Zoom a global multinational company saying that like many other multinational companies, Zoom also has employees and operations in China which are obviously operated by the US host and parent company. The company in its senior top executive and management department includes staff from India Sunil Bawan, Aparna Bawa etc. The CEO & Founder of the company has denied all the allegations of its ties with Chinese government.

The company also mentioned that India is and will remain to be an important market, and it would be looking forward to build on opportunities in the country.
